1824 & 39 Valuations<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Rudden’s in Castleblayney, Co.Monaghan are first mentioned in the 1824 Valuations where Philip Rudden was living at 4, West Street. Here he is stated as residing in a house, office and garden in what was the main street in the town, West Street. Phillip also appears here on the 1839 valuations, but on his son Thomas’s wedding certificate in 1865 he is listed as a farmer living in Modeece. Phillip appears to have been born around 1800 (Ref: Ancestry Trees).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1856 – Griffith’s Valuations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Griffith’s Valuation in 1861 appears to show the three sons of Phillip Rudden (Ref: Ancestry Trees) with agricultural leases<\/em>, Thomas Roddan at Modesse, Patrick Rudden at Killycard, and Owen Rudden who held a piece of land in Connabury, Just south of Castleblayney.

Owen appeared to own<\/em> a property in 41 York Street, Castleblayney Town, leased to John Coogan while he leased <\/em>two properties from Charles Quigley at 46 & 48 York Street, shown as a house, office & yard and a store and yard respectively. Thomas Rudden, his bother leased 47 York Street also from Charles Quiqley, indicated as a store.

Elsewhere it appears that the family were merchants involved in rearing and selling livestock (Poultry). Owen’s sons Thomas “Quinn” Ruddin and James Ruddin established businesses in Liverpool and Manchester where they became thriving wholesale meat and fish businesses in these cities. Thomas Quinn Rudden and James Rudden both stayed in England, becoming significantly wealthy with James becoming a justice of the peace (JP or Magistrate) in Liverpool.

It is worth noting that although their grandfather Phillip was spelt Rudden in the 1839 valuations, there seems to have been a conscious decision to change their name to Ruddin when in England and this has filtered through descendants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
